A few years ago work was done on the LCX, a light cruiser to fill the gap between the cruisers like the Quasars and the destroyer fleet however the idea was abandoned as the DDS (as it then was) changed it's mind. However now the LCX could be revived in a modified form as the NS are considering a Fleet Combat Ship optimised for long-range patrols and independent operation.
With the distance the NS/UNP is now covering ever growing there is a need for a ship that can operate far from base for extended periods. The ship would need facilities to allow for operation far from a friendly base including greater storage, improved accommodation and even perhaps the ability to make its own food and fuel. An NS source says the ship would come somewhere between the Quasar and Indy in size and would likely be a clean sheet new design. A feasibility and early development contract has been signed and work will be carried out during the Summer before a decision on initial gate development later in the year.
