The NS have finally begun a re-engineering of 25 ageing and worn out Clone Freighter TYA transports after several years delay mostly due to budget problems with the Clone Space Navy. The ships, TYA3s and 4s will be upgraded to a new TYA8R standard which includes replacing the engine with the same engine from the current build TYA7, boosting speed to 220c in the process, and performing a full refurbishment. The TYA8Rs should be good for another 20 years service, most of the ships to be upgraded served throughout the Clone Wars so are already a good vintage.
The Clones are desperate for the work to begin because of growing problems with their transport arm. New ships have been delayed due to money shortages and what money is available being prioritised for combat ships. As ships have been forced out of service due to age or disrepair the transport arm has struggled to meet its commitments over the last year.
The TYA8R programme, said to be worth around 750 million zarks to the NS, will be carried out over the next 2 years.
