NS want large air capable ships like Dinomark AM

President Sea Urchin was so impressed with the new Dinomark AM on his trip to Jeloka to meet Emperor MBH he apparently called an special meeting of NS Engineering and asked why NS doesn't have a ship like that! He thinks a cruiser or large destroyer sized ship that is just as capable and comfortable in atmospheres would be highly useful for NS operations.

Ships like the Isometric do have limited atmospheric capabilities. They can make emergency landing and operate fairly well in high atmosphere levels however in thicker air at lower altitudes are rather clumsy plus their nuclear engines are not exactly good for the environment.

NS to add third Alpha Centauri to fleet

NS are to add a third Alpha Centauri 93A training destroyer to the fleet. The Alpha Centauris are ex-Bolitic Helwin cruisers. NS has apparently bought the remains of three wrecked or withdrawn Helwins and will construct a third Alpha Centauri from the pieces! Anything left over will be kept as spares for the fleet which perform a very important role in "aggressor" combat training.

The third ship will be known as SS Luhman 16, following the pattern for naming the ships after the closest stars to the Solar System.

NS bringing back the H-scoop

When NS first built the Isometric-Export / Freedom 41B it was fitted with a H-scoop, the Rome 46A also had this addition. The H-scoop "sucks" in free hydrogen as the ship moves through space for use as nuclear fuel. Unfortunately the H-scoop only returned a 0.4% increase in range compared to 5% as originally envisioned and was removed from the Freedom during refits.

However NS Research has now come up with a change to NS engine and power system technology as part of the e-Core technology suite. In tests on two Freedom destroyers 3-4% increases in range were gained. The same amount of "free" fuel is gathered as before but the fuel is used differently by the engine which makes it much more effective.

NS will begin rolling out H-scoop / eCore as an option to it's Pentekonter Protector and Corkscrew Export ships from next year. As for NS ships it is likely the technology will be rolled out first on the Rome fleet as this retains the H-scoop and is due a major update (including new e-Core engines) within the next year.

NS order three extra Warrior bombers

NS has ordered three more Warrior 16A bombers on top of the existing order. Three more were due to be built leaving an eventual fleet of seventeen (originally eighteen but one was lost in combat) but now the final fleet will be twenty strong. This will allow for greater flexibility during times of upgrade and refits to maintain strength in the key strategic attack squadrons of the fleet.

The Warrior fleet will receive a tactical update over the next few months which will include improvements to it's Strategic Attack Suite (new IR sensor, upgraded data analysis computer and improved operator feedback).

Call for three "response hubs"

With the President's blessing Zeppelin has revealed more about his review into NS' armed forces. A key recommendation is for three "response hubs" based on the edge of NS/UNP space. These would supplement NSIS' HQ and carry out intelligence gathering and analysis as well as being a staging post for special forces and rapid response. Zeppelin has suggested Starbot, Miliaris and a site in Remedian space for the hubs.

"NSIS is too centralised and this can cause delay, the response hubs would be closer to possible threats and faster to respond." Zeppelin said at a media briefing.

Zeppelin also says there should be a dedicated fast special forces ship. The former Fulcrum fast transport was never replaced he said and there was a need for a worm drive equipped ship that could host up to 40 Space Prowlers plus support staff and support operations.

Zeppelin presents review of NS armed forces

The Head of the NS Armed Forces Zeppelin has concluded the review of the very thing he is in charge of and reported back to the NS Politburo. Zeppelin looked at NS space, air and land forces and looked at whether they are sufficient to meet current and projected future needs.

The review will remain confidential though an edited executive summary has been put in the public domain. It calls for NS to increase it's rapid reaction capabilities, intelligence gathering and special forces.

President Sea Urchin has already said that it will be up to his successor to act on the review, that might even be Zeppelin himself though Windscorpion is the odds-on favourite.

Fleet News (01/06/19)

42-108 Centaurus is the latest Proxima Centauri 42A rebuild of a Starsystem, just one of which remains to be converted. The last conversion has indeed begun so in essence the Starsystem has finally left NS service after twenty-six years service.

57-109 Parsnip is the latest Protector 57A light patrol ship to enter service.

Two Guardian 54A (54-102 Elaine Farnham and 54-106 Gordon Alton) legacy patrol ships have been withdrawn. They required refuelling and heavy overhaul and it was not considered economic considering their remaining time due in service.
