Pentekonter Protector line-up rejigged with Proton engines
NS has relaunched the best selling Pentekonter Protector patrol ship line with the new fuel efficient Proton RM-01 engine - which is expected to be cleared for service in September. The 1xx series low-end Pentekonter has been dropped with NS now concentrating on the 2xx mid-end and 3xx high-end series, both will have standard and e-Core variants - the latter with the new engine which has up to 20% savings in fuel. For smaller nations such a saving will be very attractive. A MCM version of the 260 will be available to replace the 150M.
The new line-up is as follows:

Further changes in NS command structure
Following the promotion of Caratore to Director of Operations his former role as Head of the Space Fleet has been taken by Akbar who had commanded the Rapid Reaction Force. This in turn has been taken over by Rubik Cube Warrior.
Meanwhile the highly regarded Kalifei, one of the senior intelligence officers in NS+, will be promoted to a new role as Head of Military Intelligence, basically running NS intelligence operations under Windscorpion's oversight. Her new role will not begin until the reorganisation of NS+.

Torus demoted to NS North Chief, NS+ to be disbanded
Following an investigation by former DDS Commander Witchdoctor and discussion with the NS Politburo (sans Torus of course) it has been decided that the former Director of Operations (and Deputy Commander) Torus was at some fault for the fiasco a few weeks ago. NS Commander Knobhead acknowledged that Torus could not be blamed for failings lower down the command ladder however she had to take responsibility.
Torus will take over NS North which ironically was last led by the traitor Von Kane. She will report directly to Zeppelin who is the head of NS armed forces. Caratore will take over being Director of Operations full time though Sea Urchin will be Deputy Commander. Torus expressed regret for the events of the last few weeks but accepted her demotion and pledged to continue to serve.
NS+ Chief Stella was also under investigation and was also found to have made mistakes though is likely to avoid any direct punishment. Instead Knobhead has said NS+ will be disbanded with the internal security and intelligence roles separated. NS engage and destroy pirate fleet
The fightback against the pirates is continuing, New Sparta is reporting that a pirate fleet approaching the ship containing the stolen Martian gold (which NS had already secured) was attacked by an NS task force. Six pirate ships are reported to have been lost with a Freedom 41B MCS being lost in the battle after it was struck by TPMs.
Two other ships received notable damage. NS Commander Knobhead said that the pirates would be crushed utterly.

Trader returned to Solaris
The transport attacked and badly damaged by pirates, 071-110 Trader, has arrived at Solaris after being towed by another Provider 071A. The ship suffered heavy damage to its front section including the bridge. It could be controlled from the engineering centre though this tends to be avoided if possible plus all navigational systems had been lost so it would have needed another ship to know which way to go anyway!
NS Engineering have carried out an initial assessment. The ship will require a new front crew section and some other repairs. NS have decided it will be upgraded to Skytrain 131A standard with the fitting of worm drive. This should be completed by the end of the year.

Operation Sharp Focus 2117
Despite thoughts it might be delayed or cancelled the June exercise Sharp Focus 2117 will go ahead as planned. One reason is the theme of the exercise: mine warfare. NS' mine warfare assets are not involved in the anti-piracy operation so can be spared. However the number of ships originally planned to be involved has been cut.

NS rescue Martian gold!
To the relief of the UNP (and New Sparta) the billions of zarks worth of gold stolen from the Bank of Mars has been retrieved by NS. In an operation led by Windscorpion a freighter holding the gold was discovered hidden near a brown dwarf star guarded by 4 pirate fighters. The freighter was secured and 3 pirate ships destroyed according to reports. The NS ship involved, SS Velocity, sustained some damage though is now under repair.
NS ships are currently en route to help. The gold will be bought back to the UNP under heavy guard. Its thought it will be held at the Bank of England on Terra until the vaults on Mars are repaired.

Knobhead names Sea Urchin Deputy Commander
In an interesting move NS Commander Knobhead has named Director of Technology Sea Urchin the Deputy NS Commander. The position was held by Torus until her suspension. Sea Urchin has not been named Acting Deputy which means its likely Torus will not get the role back even if given a clean bill of health.
Deputy Commander is fairly prestigious though is largely ceremonial, as even if Knobhead was killed or incapacitated it would not be necessarily the Deputy who took over however it is an important symbol. A sign Knobhead wants to reduce Torus' influence in New Sparta.

However some observers believe she does not really have that much of a case to answer as the defection of a figure as senior as Von Kane was unprecedented though some of the immediate responses could have been better. Instead they wonder if Torus' political enemies are taking advantage to damage her future prospects especially to the position as NS Commander where she was seen as a front runner to replace Knobhead when he is expected to stand down next year.
One columnist for the Daily Proxima said that she thought Torus would survive though may be demoted. Whatever happens her status as heir apparent has been crushed.
