NS admit Caratore and Von Kane broken out of gaol

Windy's private security arm PHALANX has suffered a serious security breach at it's prison. An unidentified individual (PHALANX are not saying who) attacked the prison killing fifteen PHALANX guards, and released Caratore from his cell.

Von Kane was also released after he attacked and severely injured a senior PHALANX interrogator. It is not thought Von Kane was part of the Caratore conspiracy but took advantage of the situation.

Sea Urchin plans top-level re-organisation

At the latest Politburo meeting President Sea Urchin has said the top-level management of New Sparta will be re-jigged in the coming months. This is necessary anyway after the treason of Caratore. Torus was moved to VP Operations but her former role has remained unfilled. Sea Urchin is considering a more radical re-organisation, it is possible he will formally make Torus and VP Intel Windscorpion designated deputies.

Sea Urchin also dropped the alert status to AMBER, though partly because the stretched fleet is struggling to maintain the increased activity and availability rates needed for ORANGE (and higher).

Operation Ground Shock 2119

This month's exercise is Ground Shock, NS' annual ground attack exercise and the first of the "big four" on the schedule. Due to shortages of ships (due to the light patrol fleet situation) most escorts for the bombers and transports will be Porquatian and Raegris ships. However President Sea Urchin said it would be a great opportunity for training with NS allies.

The exercise will take place in Remedian space before crossing over to an asteroid near Sanga Alpha where the final "attack" will take place. As usual this will be with live nuclear weapons. The exercise will begin next week and include the following ships:

21-101 Missileer (flagship)
16-101 Warrior (attack wing flag)
16-109 Wave
16-111 Wild Swan
35-107 Snow Leopard
35-203 Invincible
71-116 Voyager
73-102 Stratotanker

+ 3 Raegris and 4 Porquat 640 ships

Next ship building plan to be dominated by Protector

NS are currently drawing up the next ship building plan for 2119/2120. As expected it will be dominated by the Protector 57A which is entering mass production to replace the rapidly ageing fleet of legacy light patrol assets. It is thought eight will be built in the plan, though as three are still pending with the current plan that might be a tough act.

The light patrol fleet is on a knife edge even with the introduction of emergency Okra 86L patrol ships based on Coril shuttles. So many legacy ships are out of service or limited in what they can do (some ships are limited to orbital operations as they are now too fragile for superluminal travel) that two Isometrics and a Corkscrew have been drafted in to cover patrol circuits in recent weeks. A Provider transport will be used next week as there is little remaining slack in the fleet.

VP Ops Torus said that by later in the year enough Protectors should be available to begin easing the strain though things will be tight until 2121.

NS and Dinos form joint intelligence group to tackle conspiracy

New Sparta and the Dino Empire have formed a joint intelligence group comprising members of NSIS and SS-CINT to tackle the conspiracy that has engulfed both powers. It is rumoured that a third party is behind the conspiracy and that joint plans are being made to respond though the identity of that third party is being kept a closely guarded secret.

Weekly meetings are to be held, alternating between Proxima Centauri and Dino-Land.

NS finally secure new ship order!

New Sparta has received it's first order for spaceships since last May when Porquat 640 ordered five Pentekonter-M minesweepers. Castaris have ordered two more Pentekonters to join their existing fleet of the type.

The lack of new orders has been worrying New Sparta, though they have received a number of small upgrade orders and won some service contracts. There is a fear that the market for warships has become saturated. A reboot of the export portfolio is still expected though is now long overdue.

Operation Dawn Rising 2119

NS has begun it's first exercise of 2119, Dawn Rising 2119. The exercise was supposed to take place in late January but was delayed due to the Caratore crisis. VP Operations Torus did consider cancelling the exercise but decided it should take place as it will include valuable training for special forces and strategic reconnaissance. Skills which may be vitally needed in the near future...

A single scenario will be the focus of this year's exercise. A special forces team will be taken from Remedian space to Starbot and then onto Aldebra which will act as an "enemy" planet.

Fleet News 02/02/19

Two Protector 57A patrol ships have joined the fleet, they are 57-103 Pear and 57-104 Prunus.

The latest Proxima Centauri 42A conversion is 42-107 Isometric. Originally the trials ship Isometric was going to be the last ship to be converted but cracks found in it's reactor array meant it was bumped up the list.

Finally 161-104 Inquest is the latest Depender 161A intelligence gathering ship (allegedly) to enter service.

Type 51B will have Z8 cannon but next generation already planned

The second batch of twenty Type 51 ships will be the Type 51B which will be built in the first half of the 2120s. New Sparta has begun refining the specification for this second batch of Type 51s to follow on from the Corkscrew. The Type 51B is likely to be the same size as the A, earlier rumours of a longer hull are no thought unlikely, though the internal arrangement will be changed to give more space for Space Prowler special forces.

The biggest change though will be stub "wings", a source said the Type 51B will look a bit like the Clone Shark frigate in that regard. The wings will include two podded Z8 cannons. This is the follow on from the Zip/Z7 and is a full aspect cannon with a wide angle of fire. The two podded Z8s will have 360 degree coverage around the Type 51B.

The next step though, likely to enter service around 2125 will be the ZX cannon, which is said to be a merging of Zip technology with 360 CIWS. Instead of having a discreet cannon the entire hull will b a "cannon" with ZX giving 360 degree coverage and rapid rate of fire. One NS Research source said it could be the biggest revolution in space warfare since the TPM.
